A true divers paradise located in the Costa Rican Pacific are the Bat islands (Islas Murcielago). This island chain consists of rugged and uninhabited small islands. They can be reached from local dive centers by an hour and a half boat trip (28 miles/45 km distance) from Playa de Coco beach. If you want to explore many more dive sites on the islands and along the Guanacaste coast line we recommend to book a liveaboard diving cruise with the Okeanos Aggressor. At the end of this page you will find rates and schedule.
Since the Bat islands are located on the extreme western tip of the Santa Barbara National Park, the surrounding waters enter into protected area.
During our visit at the Bat islands, we could see pacific sailfish, killer whales, tunas, big mantas, bottlenose dolphins and spinner dolphins, which suggests a healthy underwater environment.
It is also recommended to give the islands a visit. You may land on a beautiful white sand beach, visit the only National Park building and hike up the near by hills which provide a spectacular all-round view on the islands. During the hike its possible to oberve reptils and birds.
