A true divers paradise located in the Costa Rican Pacific are the Bat islands (Islas Murcielago). This island chain consists of rugged and uninhabited small islands. They can be reached from local dive centers by an hour and a half boat trip (28 miles/45 km distance) from Playa de Coco beach. If you want to explore many more dive sites on the islands and along the Guanacaste coast line we recommend to book a liveaboard diving cruise with the Okeanos Aggressor. At the end of this page you will find rates and schedule.

Since the Bat islands are located on the extreme western tip of the Santa Barbara National Park, the surrounding waters enter into protected area.

During our visit at the Bat islands, we could see pacific sailfish, killer whales, tunas, big mantas, bottlenose dolphins and spinner dolphins, which suggests a healthy underwater environment.

It is also recommended to give the islands a visit. You may land on a beautiful white sand beach, visit the only National Park building and hike up the near by hills which provide a spectacular all-round view on the islands. During the hike its possible to oberve reptils and birds.

DIVING CONDITIONS AT THE BAT ISLANDS

Scuba divers visit the archipelago to enjoy  close encounters with bull sharks and giant manta rays.

From the end of November to the end of February strong north winds can make it impossible for the boats to leave the harbour. If this happens, the Catalina Islands are a nice alternative.

The underwater world of the Bat islands (Islas Murcielago) has much to offer. From sea turtles, wahoos, barracudas, schools of cow nows rays, eagle rays, pacific sailfish to  interesting smaller critters such as frogfish, octopus, seahorses, nudibranches and many types of moray eels.

Spinner and bottle nose dolphins, Orcas and Pilot whales me be encountered during the boat rides and even under water. Many humpback whales are entering the area between June and October and December to March. There will not be a lot left on the bucket list.

The water temperatures vary from 73 to 84 degree Fahrenheit (23 to 29 degrees Celsius) and visibility ranges from 16 to 72 feet (5 to 22 meters).

Dive sites like "Gran Susto" featuring bull sharks, "Punta Este" and "Bajo Negro" featuring giant mantas and schooling fish, are often demanding. Just typical east pacific ocean diving with strong currents, waves and swell and therefore only suitable for experienced divers.

No buoy's or lines are used for descending, common are negative (direct) descents. Dive depths ranges usually between 82 to 108 feet (25 to 33 meters).

BEST TIME TO DIVE AT THE BAT ISLANDS

The best time to dive in the Bat islands is from May to November, when there are very good chances to see the mighty bull sharks and the giant Manta rays.
